Version 1 of Abdul Ali Mazari

Full text of this version

Abdul Ali Mazari led Hizb-i Wahdat from 1989 until his death.1 He called for the rights of all of Afghanistan's ethnic groups to be guaranteed in its political order.1 Many Hazaras remember him as Baba Mazari.1

His death

In March 1995 he was taken by the Taliban during negotiations and died in their custody. Accounts of how and where he died differ, and the Taliban have given their own version.1

A contested record

Mazari led a party during the war for Kabul, in which Human Rights Watch documents abuses by several factions, including abductions of civilians attributed to Hizb-i Wahdat.2 This entry should grow to reflect both what he means to the community and the evidence about that war.
