Version 1 of Hazaras in Australia

Full text of this version

Most Hazara arrivals in Australia date from the late 1990s onward, many as asylum seekers and refugees.1

In August 2001 the Norwegian ship MV Tampa rescued 433 asylum seekers at sea, most of them Afghan Hazaras, and Australia's refusal to let them land became a defining political crisis.2

One compilation reports a community of about 41,700 in 2021. Treat this as an estimate.1

Please add the history of local communities, associations and achievements, with sources.
