Full text of this version
Hizb-i Wahdat and Harakat-i Islami forces retook Yakaolang, in the Hazarajat, on 28 December 2000.1 The Taliban began advancing on it from Bamyan on 7 January 2001, and reached the district centre of Nayak the next day. They held the area until driven out on 23 January.2
Search parties went house to house rounding up men. About a hundred men gathered at an aid centre were herded towards Nayak, and most were later executed.2 Village elders who came to negotiate were killed, as were staff of aid agencies and a clinic.2 Humanitarian workers estimated that thousands fled.2
The sections of the report consulted for this article give figures for individual sites rather than a single total. The report also names victims in a partial list, which should be recorded here with care.1
The same report documents an earlier killing of Hazaras at Robatak Pass in May 2000.1
